刚才看到一篇文章,与大家分享 The challenges of working as an Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) Specialist Nurse IP&C Specialist Nurses have to be many things to many people, often at the same time. They are leaders, educators, facilitators, collaborators, innovators, negotiators, change agents and complex decision makers. Aspiring IP&C Nurses looking to specialise and join an established IP&CT need to demonstrate that they possess a natural sense of curiosity, patience, tact and diplomacy, empathy, a sense of humour, considerable organisational and time management skills, the ability to multi-task, prioritise and work under pressure, as well as a genuine interest in and commitment to HCAI prevention and control. One of the many challenges that IP&C Specialist Nurses face almost on a daily basis is that of challenging poor practice or non-compliance and holding staff to account (a common theme in Box 2.1) whilst also engaging with staff and fostering excellent working relationships at all levels of the organisation. To do this, they need excellent communication, negotiating and teaching skills, and continually need to show that they are competent, knowledgeable and credible practitioners. For the IP&C Specialist Nurses to be seen as credible, they need to demonstrate possession of a body of specialist expert knowledge on all aspects of infection prevention and control, including microbiology, immunology, epidemiology (the study of infectious diseases) and decontamination, and in-depth knowledge of the evidence base and national guidance, and their application in everyday clinical practice. An understanding of, and experience working in, different specialities is particularly helpful here as it helps the IP&C Specialist Nurses relate to the challenges that nursing and medical staff face in caring for patients with complex nursing and medical needs. Contrary to popular belief, the IP&CT do not always have the perfect answer or solution to every question or dilemma. A credible IP&C Specialist Nurse, however, will always be consistent with his or her advice and arrive at a response or solution that is fair, reasonable, practical and based on a sound risk assessment. As healthcare has advanced over the years and the nature of infections and infectious diseases has changed, so too has the role of IP&C Specialist Nurses, and the level of knowledge, skills and competencies that they need has increased substantially. Competencies for IP&C Nurses and Practitioners were first developed by the Infection Control Nurses Association in 2000 and reviewed in 2004, before being extensively revised in 2011 (Burnett and the Infection Prevention Society and Competency Steering Group, 2011). These currently consist of 17 competencies which sit within the four advanced practitioner domains (clinical practice, education, research, and leadership and management) and are linked to the NHS knowledge and skills framework (DH, 2004).
