INTRODUCTION
Blood culture is a crucial microbiologic investigation for the diagnosis of infectious diseases. It is the gold standard for the
diagnosis of enteric fever, bacteremias (pneumococcal/Hib/staphylococcal), infective endocarditis, nosocomial blood-
stream infections, and some exotic infections such as brucellosis. Apart from diagnosis of the etiologic agent, blood
cultures allow for assessment of antimicrobial sensitivity of the isolate, which is crucial in today’s era of antimicrobial
resistance.
