The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final rule that prohibits certain extralabel uses of cephalosporins in cattle, swine, chickens, and turkeys. The FDA has determined that extralabel uses of such drugs in animals are likely to lead to the emergence of cephalosporin-resistant strains of foodborne bacterial pathogens, and present a risk to the public health. The rule is scheduled to take effect on April 5,2012 and APIC is preparing comments to the rule in advance of the agency’s March 6 deadline.
