he My 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene approach defines the key moments when health-care workers should perform hand hygiene.
This evidence-based, field-tested, user-centred approach is designed to be easy to learn, logical and applicable in a wide range of settings.
This approach recommends health-care workers to clean their hands
before touching a patient,
before clean/aseptic procedures,
after body fluid exposure/risk,
after touching a patient, and
after touching patient surroundings.

n 5 May 2010: Come together and lend a hand - new tools available!
The WHO SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands global annual initiative invites health-care facilities to participate in a global observation survey on or around 5 May 2010 by observing hand hygiene compliance with Moment 1 (before touching a patient) and submitting data to WHO.
A Hand Hygiene Moment 1 Observation Form and Global Observation Survey instructions are now available and a WHO web-based Moment 1 global survey data collection site will be launched at the end of April.
