First Global Patient Safety Challenge, Clean Care is Safer Care Vision 2020
The First Global Patient Safety Challenge, Clean Care is Safer Care, was launched in 2005. Since then, 116 WHO Member States have pledged to take action to address the problem of healthcare associated infection (HAI). Vision 2020 aims to take these pledges to the patient, with 100% of the world’s countries signed up to hand hygiene at the point of care by 2020 and a substantial increase in country-wide hand hygiene campaigns.
Target 5000
By 5 May 2010, WHO aims to have 5000 hospitals and health-care facilities worldwide registered for delivering hand hygiene at the point of care. A map showing the number of facilities from every country will be up on this website soon. Watch this space!
Revised Hand Hygiene Implementation Toolkit & Self Assessment Framework
To help all hospitals and healthcare facilities that register their interest, WHO is reviewing the existing hand hygiene implementation toolkit. All elements of the toolkit are being reviewed and some are being revised and updated. The completed toolkit will be available on the Clean Care is Safer Care website from 5 May 2009.
A new self assessment framework is also being developed. This is designed to help hospitals and healthcare facilities to assess their capability to deliver hand hygiene at the point of care based on a five-step model. This new tool will be available on the Clean Care is Safer Care website from 5 May 2009.
Two-day Technical Meeting in Geneva
Countries with existing hand hygiene campaigns will be invited to Geneva to attend a two day meeting on 5-6 May 2009. Planning for the meeting is currently underway. The aim is to learn and share experiences, to expand the number of in-country campaigns, and to formalize and further the campaign country network that was established in 2007.
Pilot Test Sites - Update
There are currently hand hygiene pilot sites in each of the following countries: Bangladesh, Costa Rica, Hong Kong SAR, Italy, Mali, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. In these countries, hospitals have been working to a planned programme for the last three years, introducing hand hygiene improvements and collaborating with the First Global Patient Safety Challenge team.
