Infection Control should be entering a “Golden Age”. The impact of epidemics around the world including SARS and Avian Influenza has finally caught the world’s attention. We now realize that infections are not only with us, but prevention is pivotal. Furthermore, we realize now that Hospital Acquired Infection is without doubt a major disease burden and most of them could be prevented. The World Health Organization has also chosen for their first Patient Safety Challenge the important topic of ‘Hand Hygiene’. All these are solid evidences that the ‘Golden Age’ should be just around the corner.

However, any ‘Golden Age’ will be short-lived if there is no real improvement in infrastructure and practice. It is extremely easy to just improve superficially, without addressing genuine issues and problems. Infection Control is basically “expert knowledge” which must be put into practice. Thus, education is always a central component of our strategy and then, to implement new policies we must all work together. Networking and the examples of success are also tremendously important as we can then point to these models and get our hospitals to follow suit.

This is the spirit of the APSIC congress. We have sourced the best of speakers and also model practices in the region. Examples from around the world that should benefit us in this region are also included. It is important that we learn these well and bring the lessons home to initiate actual improvements. There are also ample opportunities to network with others, fostering collaboration and partnership. The ‘Golden Age’ will only be real, when improvements are developed and initiated in the frontline. Thus, the real work will begin only after the congress. Hopefully, the seeds that will be shown will blossom into trees and forests in the years to come, and then the ‘Golden Age’ will be simply inevitable.

Thank you very much,

Sincerely,

Professor Seto Wing Hong
President, APSIC
