Epidemiologist John Boyce, M.D., is section chief of Infectious Diseases and director of the Hand Hygiene Resource Center at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut. Boycereceived his M.D. degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, and completed his training in internal medicine at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I. and at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. He completed an infectious disease fellowship at the University of Texas in Houston. He served two years in the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention's Epidemic Intelligence Service, and an additional two years as a medical epidemiologist at CDC. Boyce has a long-standing interest in the epidemiology and prevention of nosocomial infections.
Boyce is past president of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and chaired the Hand Hygiene Task Force, a coordinated effort of the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (under auspices of CDC), Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, and theInfectious Diseases Society of America. He is co-author of Hand Hygiene Guideline for Healthcare Settings, published by theCDC. He has served as temporary consultant to the World Health Organization's Global Patient Safety Challenge since 2004.
