YM: Jessica,
Nice! Did you win the lottery?
Jessica: Ah? What do you mean?
YM: 山寨,就是, 啊……not a real LV,a fake one……
Jessica: Oh, I see! The watch is a knockoff! k-n-o-c-k-o-f-f, knockoff.
Jessica: Right. Xiushui Market is the place to go for designer knockoffs.
Jessica: (Hahaha...) No, in that case, you say you're a Zhang Ziyi lookalike!
You're a Lady GaGa lookalike.
Jessica:Thanks! I'm flattered!
Avatar, the movie?
Jessica: Oh! You mean a spoof. That means you will imitate the movie's style, but in a humorous or sarcastic way.
Jessica: That's right! s-p-o-o-f, spoof.

Jimmy: Jessica,

Jessica:

Jimmy:

Jessica: Oh, in English we call that an upset.

Jimmy: Upset?

Jessica: That's true. 做形容词的时候,重音在后面,是 upset (emphasis on the second syllable), 指不高兴,但是做名词,重音在前面,upset (emphasis on the first syllable), it means an unexpected win.

Jessica: Easy. That team's called the favorite.

Jimmy: 这么说,The law school team was the favorite to win the game.

Jessica: That's right. You can also refer to the team that was expected to lose as the underdog.

Jessica: Jimmy!Isn't your girlfriend Rachel the team captain?

That's why I always cheer for the underdog...

Jessica: hehe..... What did you learn today?

Let's go drink some cold beer!

Jimmy:

Donny: Why?

But look at my belly, is it really that bad?

Donny: 呃......I have to say she has a point. You've got a beer belly for sure.

Donny: Yeah. It's easy to remember.

Donny: Let's see....you can call it a "keg." k-e-g, keg. A keg is a barrel to store beer.

Jimmy: keg

Donny: Don't worry. You can go from keg to six-pack abs if you exercise and eat healthy.

Jimmy: six-pack abs?

Donny: Six-pack abs are the muscles at your midsection.

Donny: I know it's hard, but a lot of people say sit-ups really help them lose their beer bellies. You want your girl to be happy, right?

Donny: Enjoy your workout! But first tell me what you've learned today.

Jimmy: 第一“啤酒肚”叫 beer belly, 或者 keg;第二,六块腹肌,叫 six-pack abs;第三,仰卧起坐叫 sit-up,s-i-t, sit; u-p, up. sit-up!

JESSICA: Lulu! Too bad you have to fly to Shanghai for your friend's wedding next month.

JESSICA: What? Did they break up?

LL: 分手就是 break up? b-r-e-a-k, break. u-p up. She broke up with her boyfriend?

JESSICA: Yes. Break up with someone Lulu, What happened? Why did they break up?

JESSICA: What's

He has another girlfriend.

JESSICA: Really? He cheated on the girl he was gonna marry?

JESSICA: That's right!

Her boyfriend cheated on her,

JESSICA: There you go! Cut their ties! If I were her, I would not give that guy another chance either!

LL: Cut their ties?

Now let's see what you've learned today!

LL: 第一,情侣分手是 break up;

第二,劈腿,对伴侣不忠,是 cheat on someone;

Donny:

I was scared to death!

Donny: I told you you would be scared to death and you didn't believe me.

Donny: Yeah. We say the scene made my hair stand on end.

连在一起,to make one's hair stand on end 吓得人毛发都立起来了。所以要说那一幕吓得我汗毛都立起来了,就可以讲 the scene made my hair stand on end.

Donny: Right. Speaking of blood-sucking vampires, there is another way of saying you are scared to death. You can say it made my blood run cold.

to make one's blood run cold

Donny: Exactly. I am taking my girlfriend Rachel to see the movie tonight.

The movie will make her hair stand on end.

Donny: I know.... When she is scared to death, I will be there to comfort her. She will think I am her knight in shining armor.

吴琼: 啊,你想让 Rachel 觉得你是 her knight in shining armor 身穿闪亮盔甲的骑士?

Donny: (haha)

吴琼: 第一,吓死了是 scared to death;

第二,吓得毛发倒立是 to make one's hair stand on end;

第三:吓得浑身冰凉是 to make one's blood run cold.

Jessica: Wuqiong,

Jessica: No money? You told me you got a scholarship!

Jessica:

WQ: 就是 buy a lot of things!

Jessica: Oh! You went on a shopping spree!

WQ: shopping spree?

Jessica: Right! Spree is spelt s-p-r-e-e. Going on a shopping spree means you spend a lot of money during a single shopping trip.

I went on a shopping spree after getting my scholarship money!

Jessica: But do you really need all the things you bought on the shopping spree?

Jessica: Haha! Actually, in English, we have a similar expression--your money was burning a hole in your pocket.

WQ: My money was burning a hole in my pocket?

Jessica: Wuqiong, next time your money is burning a hole in your pocket, take me with you! I'll make sure we only go window shopping!

WQ: Window shopping?

Jessica: (Chuckle) No. Window shopping means we only look at the window displays, without really buying anything!

Now tell me what you've learned today!

WQ: 第一,扫货叫go on a shopping spree;

第二,烧包叫money is burning a hole in one's pocket;

Donny: Hey, Fang Fang, what's up? Do you like your new job?

Donny: 打杂?What do you do everyday?

Donny: Oh! Someone who does small and unimportant tasks at work is called a go-for. g-o-f-o-r, go-for.

Donny: We say they "run errands for others." Run is spelled r-u-n, errands is spelled e-r-r-a-n-d-s. The word "errand" means a short trip that's taken to finish a necessary task.

Donny: That's right. I guess you don't really like running errands for your boss, right?

Donny: She gives you a lot of busy work, I'm assuming? The phrase "busy work" refers to tasks that keep people busy but are not very useful.

Donny: That's right! Fangfang, a lot of people start as go-fors and work their way up. I'm sure you'll do just fine. Now let's see what you've learned today!

FF: 公司里跑腿打杂的小弟小妹叫 go-for;

跑腿是 run errands for others;

Jessica:

I don't get it.

Jessica: Oh! You mean you arranged to meet someone, but the person was a no-show!

ZM: No-show? 把 no 和 s-h-o-w “show” 放在一起,no-show,就是“没来,爽约”。

Jessica: Yes! But Zhuang Ming, who was this no-show? Your boyfriend?

You went on a blind date!

Jessica: Yes! if your friend set you up with someone you've never met before, that's called a blind date. Blind dates usually end up bad.

Jessica: In this case, Zhuang Ming, you say "I got stood up"!

Jessica: No. If you "stand someone up", you fail to show up at a date.

Jessica: That's right! Last month, I had a date with a really cute guy, but he stood me up!

ZM: 第一,“爽约,没来”,可以说 no-show;

第二,放别人鸽子,可以说 stand someone up;

Jimmy: Donny,

Donny: What happened, Jimmy? You look terrible!

But I totally forgot!

Donny: Hey! Hey! Don't have a cow!

Donny: What I meant is-- you need to calm down. "Don't have a cow"

Don't have a cow!

Donny: Yes! You can say chill out. It means calm down, or "don't panic".

Honey! Chill out!

Donny: 呃....I think you better say "Honey, I'm really sorry. How can I make up to you?"

Jimmy:

Donny: Oh, speaking of the word "chill", you can also say "take a chill
pill". It's another way of saying "calm down".

Jimmy: Take a chill pill.

Donny: You got it. So what are you going to do for tonight's date?

Donny: Before you go, tell me what you've learned today!

Don't have a cow; 第二,Chill out; 第三:Take a chill pill.

Donny: Hi, Wuqiong, do you want to go to this concert with me?

So you can use the word "popularity", p-o-p-u-l-a-r-i-t-y, popularity.

Donny: Exactly. I've heard about this singer's rising popularity. That's why I want to go to his concert.

Donny: Well, here's the guest star list. Most of them are popular too, but who's this person on the bottom of the list?

Donny: No wonder I've never heard about her. She's a has-been. The word "has-been" means someone who is no longer popular.

WQ: has-been? has 和 been放一起就是过气的人,过时的东西。This guest star used to be famous and popular, but now she's just a has-been.

Donny:

Donny: That's possible. This concert will be a good opportunity for her to stage a comeback.

If this singer makes a comeback, she will regain her popularity!

Donny: Exactly. Now let's see what you've learned today!

WQ: 第一:人气叫 popularity; 第二:过气、过时的人或物是 a has-been; 第三:东山再起是 a comeback.
